what’s poppin’? august

The monthly series where we pick out a handful of fun gigs and such happening around the sound. Mostly in Malmö and Lund, but also in Copenhagen and maybe even further? That is if we think that it’s something worth giving a mention. Did we miss anything? TELL US!

summer! at last! good vibes! at last! good times? hopefully! more gigs this month at least! malmöfestival is in town, which means a bunch of music, this might act more as a mini-guide to that if anything; what I think might be worth checking out. that’s kind of the point of this whole thing (thesound.se). yeah uh buy me a beer or something i’m pretty cool. see ya!

Scania Sounds Showcase (MALMÖ SCENEN MALMÖFESTIVALEN) showcase with tender youth a danish noise-artrock-ba1nd, !SAURA a swedish artrap-artist making cool sounding music idk, the guilt who do electropunk, malmös own mary annes polar rig which makes some of swedens absolutely sickest sounding indierock, they’re sort of a must see idk, and mundane experience, an althiphop collective. it’s a funky bunch! ending with dj suckmatitties

MOJO PIN (ROCK STAGE MALMÖFESTIVALEN) you know who it is, sweden’s sickest, nastiest, absolutely most rockin grunge outfit straight outta h-borg.

magnloia drake (ROCK STAGE MALMÖFESTIVALEN) folk indierock which sounds absolutely amazing from what little I’ve heard, might be sick.

major business (ROCK STAGE MALMÖFESTIVALEN) rock-rock ya know, but it might be more to it than that. sounds intense, sounds fun, idk!

citric dummies / erik nervous (PLAN B) what I like to call “douche-punk” – it’s noisy, it’s fast, and it’s dumb – it’s fun! and noisy artpunkrock where a lot is happening at once but at the same time not enough is going on, could be funky.

power of suck / cub & wolf (MEDLEY) guided by voices cover band. 90s indierock rockers.

30/8

nordic cactus (GRAND) an indierockband who wants to call themselves postpunk, they’ve got something interesting going on, might not fully translate on their scrappy home-recordings, maybe it will live! latest single has a nice pavement-vibe to it, might be worth checking out!

poetry (C’MON) malmöian noisy postpunk, sick shit.

and now for the return of the fan-favorite segment; what I like to call

this is a section I’m calling “I’m not going to WayOutWest2024 but if you are, this is what you should check out”

wayoutwest is pretty cool, all vegetarian, all good vibes, in the park; it’s always a good time. I’ve seen some of my favorite gigs there, some of my favorite memories are attentinding the shindig. lately however, the lineup has been lacking a bit IMO, not to say that there isn’t stuff that I would check out, but smaller artists are sparse and their focus has widened a lot to garner a larger audience. good for them maybe. but yeah they still know how to book some pretty sick shit. big thief is always a delight, they’ve gotten me teary eyed a few times. new lineup on stage as of like yesterday though? they’re now a 5-piece and their new stuff is very jamband-ish and that’s mainly what they played recently, could be sick. not is like my 17th favorite song of all time. wednesday is one of the best bands around right now, when I saw them at loppen last year I cried like a lot, especially to formula 1. they’re tender, they’re hard, they’re sick as fuck. alvvays is like the best indiepop band, shoegazy shit that probably would make me cry if I were to see them live. they hit all the right notes that make my brain feel good, ya know? hotline tnt make sick sounding shoegazy indierock, great hooks and melodies will hopefully get the crowd moving. and yeah that’s what I’d personally go there for, but there are other more OK band playing that don’t really spark a fire. uh yeah, thanks for reading the best segment around right now, other contemporary music-sites they just can’t keep up with this output. see ya! (not at wayoutwest because I won’t  be there)
